The body of actress Natalie Wood was found floating Sunday in the ocean off Catalina Island. She was married to Robert Wagner. A car packed with explosives blew up in a school neighborhood Sunday in Damascus, Syria. Its blast ripped away walls of apartment buildings and sent glass and debris through the crowded block. The goverment news agency said 64 people were dead and 135 wounded, many of them children. Fires! The Tryon Volunteer Fire Department was called to three grass (kudzu) fires Sunday. About 8 p.m. they were called to the bank along Hwy. 176 opposite Tryon Pharmacy. At 11:45 p.m. they received two calls—one on Howard Gap Road at Lynn and one on Thermal View Road near Charles Edwards’ house. At about the same time the Columbus Fire Department was called to a woods fire near St. Luke’s Hospital. Soccer Ends This Saturday The Spartanburg Recreation Department along with the Polk County Recreation Department will wind up their Youth Soccer Program this weekend, Saturday, December 5 with games starting at 10:00 a.m. These games have turned out to be exciting matches. The league involves boys and girls ages 6-11 from Saluda, Sunny View, Tryon, New Prospect, Campobello and Landrum. The public is invited to come out and watch. TUESDAY, DEC. 1,1981 Engaged Miss Dawn Elizabeth Gantt Mr. and Mrs. James Michael Gantt of Columbus announce the engagement of their daughter, Dawn Elizabeth, to Kenneth Rogers Benson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oneal Benson of Tryon. A March 6th wedding is planned at the Columbus Presbyterian Church. A graduate of Spartanburg Day School, Miss Gantt received a Bachelor of Arts and Laws from the Unviersity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and will receive her Juris Doctorate from the UNC Law School in December. She has accepted a position with the firm of Watson, Spence, Lowe and Chambless in Albany, Georgia. Mr. Benson, a graduate of Tryon High School, received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Tech and is employed with the Merck Pharmaceutical Company in Albany, Georgia. Price 10c Per Copy Landrum Parade Is Saturday At 2 The Landrum Band Booster Christmas Parade is Saturday at 2 p.m. The parade will start at the Landrum Civic Center (Depot) and end at the parking lot between Landrum High School and 0. P. Earle. Trophies will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in the following categories: Most Religious, Most Christmasy, Most Original. All participating bands will be judged for 1st, 2nd and 3rd and receive a trophy. Tryon Hounds The Tryon Hounds will meet Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Stateline and on Saturday there will be a Joint Meet at 10 a.m. at the Greenville County Kennels. Rep. Dill Blackwell (District 17, Greenville) is a gubernatorial appointee to the White House Conference on Aging, appointed by Gov. Richard Riley. In the S. C. House of Representatives Mr. Blackwell represents the Lake Lanier, Oak Grove and parts of the Gowensville areas. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene M. Jones of Tryon had as their guests over the Thanksgiving holidays their sons and families, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene M. Jones, Jr. and son, Michael, of Raleigh, and Mr. and Mrs. Tim Jones and daughters, Jessica and Lindsay of Clemson.
